Umami

Cookie-free, privacy-first web analytics you can self-host or run on the vendor's cloud.

Web Analytics

Umami is a privacy-first web analytics platform reporting pageviews, visitors, referrers, campaigns, custom events, funnels, user journeys, cohorts, retention, session replays and heatmaps without cookies or the automatic collection of personal data. It runs as a Node.js application backed by PostgreSQL, from source, as a container or with Docker Compose, or through the vendor's managed Umami Cloud. The self-hosted edition is free under an MIT licence and, per the vendor's own comparison pages, includes session replay and heatmaps at no cost, while the managed cloud tiers meter events, cap data retention and keep white-labelling and the streaming API on the Business plan and above.

Self-Hosted

Limits
Carries the full feature set at no licence cost: the vendor states session replay, heatmaps, funnels and cohorts are free when self-hosting and that cloud and self-hosted carry the same features. You provide the server, the Node.js runtime and a PostgreSQL database.
Notes
The vendor states self-hosting is free forever and that the MIT-licensed codebase is the same software behind Umami Cloud. Licence read from the repository LICENSE file (MIT, Copyright (c) 2022 Umami Software, Inc.). The public pricing page covers only the cloud tiers, so the free-self-hosting claim rests on the vendor's comparison and blog pages rather than on a dedicated self-hosting price list.

Pros & cons

Strengths

  • Self-hosting is free forever: the MIT codebase is the same software behind Umami Cloud. Source
  • Session replay and heatmaps are free when self-hosting, not gated to a paid tier. Source
  • Docker Compose starts the application and a PostgreSQL database in one command. Source

Trade-offs

  • Self-hosting needs your own Node.js 18.18+ server and PostgreSQL 12.14+ database. Source
  • Cloud session replay, heatmaps, white-labelling and the streaming API start at 200 USD per month. Source
  • Cloud is billed per event with capped retention: 6 months, 2 years or 5 years by tier. Source

  • The public price list covers only the cloud; there is no dedicated self-hosting price page. Source

  • Google Analytics/Google Analytics 4 (GA4)The vendor's comparison page is titled 'Umami vs. Google Analytics - The Privacy-First Alternative'. · The vendor states Umami covers the core web analytics you actually use in GA4: pageviews, referrers, UTM campaigns, custom events, funnels and revenue.Source
    • CaveatUmami's docs list data import only for Umami Cloud (Pro plan, handled by their team); nothing is documented for a self-hosted instance.Source
  • PlausibleThe vendor states you can migrate existing data to Umami from Google Analytics, Plausible, Matomo and other sources.Source
    • CaveatUmami advertises import from Plausible and others, but the import doc is Umami Cloud only — a Pro-plan service their team runs, and it accepts self-hosted Umami PostgreSQL dumps or CSV, not a Plausible export.Source
  • MatomoA vendor comparison page is titled 'A modern, lightweight alternative to Matomo'.Source
    • CaveatThe same import page governs Matomo data: Umami's import is a Pro-plan Cloud service handled by their team, so a self-hosted Umami has no documented path for existing Matomo history.Source
